Masonary Wood Heaters / Wood Boilers
Masonary Wood Heaters:
Once we are finished with our timber frame and have built you wonderful straw bale walls we need to heat the place somehow. The appropriate heating system depends on your personal taste and your life style. If you love a wood stove look at this.Yes it can be a bit messy but it makes us feel cozy and at home.
A problem with standard wood stoves is that their heat output is very irregular and as a result not very comfortable. You are either too hot or too cold.
Masonary Heaters solve the problem and in addition burn a lot more efficient / cleaner / greener. They absorb all the heat into the structure ( thermal mass ) and end up releasing it over a long period of time at an even rate. They can radiate heat up top 30 feet. So if you place one of these beautiful structures into the middle of your house you will be nice and cozy any time in the middle of a blizzard.
And not only that - you can bake your bread and pizza in it too - and it tastes just like grandmas.
Cost of one of these : Around 10.000 $

Wood Boilers :
this is a wood stove with a second box on the outside where there is water that circulates in between and absorbs heat from the fire. The hot water circuit is connected to a hot water tank and can be used for in floor heating. If you want to get really fancy you connect all of this to an additional set of solar panels and put a fancy control system to it and now you have a state of the art small wood boiler that burns clean and creates water for your in floor heat. A great system for a bit more money. If it gets really cold where you are and you love in floor heat maybe this is something worth you while.
The best system I have seen so far is a company called Walltherm and this is offered in Canada through a ompany called PSES in Nova Scotia
COST: For the whole system including their special hot water tank
Stove / Boiler , 4 Solar Panels and controls
20.000 $ to 25.000$
just the stove / boiler around 7000 $
