Roof structures:
On the right side you see a recent project of a typical roof structure. The rafters are housed into the ridge beam . On top of the rafters is a 2 x 6 tongue and groove fir decking nailed onto the rafters. Since in this particular project the roof is an earth roof (which weighs a lot) we have this big ridge beam. A standard insulated roof would have 8 inches of insulation and then a 5/8 tongue and groove plywood and have a much smaller ridge beam. The walls are 2 x 6 typical stud construction and in the center of the room the ridge beam is supported by a natural round log. On the outside is a second post which is a square 10"x 10" mounted on the foundation wall with a solid metal knife blade to connect it properly.
This is a very simple way of replacing the typical nailed trusses and the drywall ceiling with an appealing vaulted wood ceiling. It is slightly more costly, but adds a lot of charm and character to any building. If you are in the planning stages of a project contact us for information. If this is something you would consider, we will be happy to give you a quote.
